Mays Ranching Company is once again pleased to offer
319 preconditioned Brangus-Charolais cross calves consisting of 152 steers
and 167 heifers. This exceptional group of calves was born in September,
October, and November of 2001. The calves’ mamas are top quality Brangus
and Brangus white faced cows that were selected for various maternal abilities
such as milking ability, structural stature, feeding efficiency, carcass value,
rapid maturity, and phenotype. The herd consists of many purchased cows
as well as many replacements that have been raised on the ranch. The
purchased and replacement dams come from some of the top purebred Brangus
breeders in the nation. Like the dams, the sires were selected in the
same manner with quality being our number one initiative. Purebred Charolais
bulls for the cross with the Brangus/Brangus-baldy cowherd have been selected
from some of the nation’s top Charolais purebred breeders such as Camp Cooley
Ranch at Franklin, TX. Sire selections have been made with particular
emphasis being placed on carcass value, feed efficiency, frame type, and
phenotype. Every effort has been made to bring the best of each breed we
have represented together in the calves so that feed efficiency and carcass
value will be the ultimate gain. We believe that the genetic strategy which
has been emphasized in our dam and sire selections was especially exemplified
this year by the exceptional calf weaning weights in spite of pretty severe
drought conditions. This must be interpreted as superior genetic influence.
The calves were weaned on June 6,7, and 10. The
calves were then left in the pen for three to five days and fed a free-choice
weaning ration from bulk feeders. The calves are presently located on
the ranch in southwestern San Saba County and turned out on improved pasture
while being fed twenty percent cubes daily. It is anticipated that the
calves will be weighed and delivered f.o.b. the ranch between the 15-25 of
July. Weighing will be done on the ranch with certified scales with
a 3% pencil shrink. With our management and vaccination
program, it is our belief that these calves will stray from sickness and perform
extremely well for the buyer based on past history. For inquires on
the calves please contact Myron Mays at (915) 597-2537 or (915) 456-7741.
